Restoring an older home to its former glory is a large undertaking and some things can always make the process harder. Installing a garage door on the home can complicate your home restoration process because you want it to look right but need it to function as a modern door. It is possible to get both.
Construction of Older Doors
Many times the garage doors on older homes are made from wood. They are often beautiful, but they are heavy and depending on the age of the home, they can also have damage that makes them hard to reuse.
Some of these older doors are upright doors that swing open, others fold open in sections, and some slide on a track. With all of these doors, getting a modern door that looks the same but functions as a modern door is sometimes difficult.
Modern Doors With Old Style
Garage door manufacturers are creating new doors that echo the style of the old doors, but the materials are lighters and more energy efficient than the old wooded counterparts. The doors are typically made in a modern roll-up style, but they look like older original doors.
The new doors often include electric door openers to make it easier to open them and need far less maintenance than older doors.
Some of these doors also include glass panels to replicate the look of the original door. If you need the glass for the look, you may want to consider using a polycarbonate material for durability and security instead of the glass, but talk to the door company about this and see what they suggest.
Select the Right Door
If you replace an old door with a modern one, take some pictures of the door so you can show it to the salesperson at the garage door company. If they can see what you are removing, it will be easier to match the door with a modern door of the same style.
Many companies offer custom doors if they do not have what you are looking for. The cost will be higher, but the door will look the way you want it to and compliment your home.
Garage Door Materials
Garage doors are made from several different materials including steel, aluminum, fiberglass, and wood. The aluminum doors are the most popular doors on the market. They are lightweight, don’t need painting, and if the door is damaged, the door company can replace the panel with the damage and leave the others in place.
The steel and fiberglass doors are more common in commercial settings and wood doors are typically custom made for special situations like full house restorations.
Maintain the Garage Doors
Garage doors do require some amount of care and maintenance to keep them operating properly. Modern garage doors use tracks and rollers that are self-lubricating and do not require greasing the tracks or wheels.
On doors that open vertically, a little lubricant or penetrating oil on the hinges will keep them working properly. You can spray a little lubricant on the rollers where the wheels meet the axle as well if you feel they need it, but most of the newer door hardware comes with sealed bearings that do not require internal lubrication.
